5. Fishing for mackerel

Far away at the horizon a killer whale leaps from the water. Sisoi has no idea why. His father tells him that he expects a fight soon. Killer whales behave like that before attacking a whale they wish to devour. That day the family goes canoeing to do some fishing. In the distance, the fight.

On tonight’s menu is mackerel, since at this time of year the mackerels arrive in large groups. Dad grabs the fishing spear and takes position in the bow of the canoe. The spear has a sharpened spearhead especially for small fish. He made it of a bone that he had found near the beach, probably of a species of llama, a guanaco. Mum guides the canoe skillfully between the giant kelp towards the open sea.

Ballena Franca Austral WalvisLRDad points the spear and throws it into the water, immediately hitting the target. And again. Two fish are enough for their family. The mackerels are barbecued on the hot charcoals in the middle of the canoe. Sisoi and his sister Gaméla are in charge of maintaining the fire.

The next day, very close to them, they see a whale swimming, or rather floating, as it is heavily injured by the killer whales. How does it come out in the end?
